Title: The Ergonomic Office Environment
Speaker: Charles D. Del Tatto, PT
Time: 60-90 minutes with Q & A
Style
Lecture and power point visual material, with questions and discussion throughout the presentation.
Primary Message
Over the last 10 years, computer use has increased exponentially. As a result the
incidence of Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTD’s), particularly Carpal Tunnel
Syndrome (CTS), has increased 538%, representing 50% of all occupational
injury. To avoid widespread injury and lost productivity, it is imperative that
proper workstation design and safe work practices be understood and
implemented.
Key Points
- The traditional office was inefficient by most current standards, however, that inefficiency provided essential “rest elements” not present today.
- By understanding the risk factors and recognizing the early signs of fatigue, workers can minimize the effects of cumulative trauma.
- Workstation adjustments, although falling within the same general parameters, must be individualized to obtain maximum benefit.
- Introduce frequent rest break and/or rest elements during sustained, repetitive keyboard activity.
- Environmental design and safe work practices represent key components in an overall injury prevention strategy.
Key Advice
Do not assume baseline awareness training will solve all problems.
Start to use the self-assessment tool on a regular basis. Prioritize those areas where
absenteeism or the incidence of injury has been historically high. If symptoms persist,
have a professional evaluate both the workstation and employee as soon as possible.
